The SABC board has finally endorsed the appointment of Phil Molefe as its head of news and current affairs. SABC spokesman Kaizer Kganyago yesterday said he did not know whether the appointment was endorsed unanimously. There would have been a majority vote," Kganyago said. He said Molefe's appointment was the culmination of a process that began with a call for applications through newspaper advertisements, a shortlist and interviews by a panel of the SABC board. "The board is pleased that the appointment has been finalised and expresses confidence that Mr Molefe and his team will deliver on the very important mandate of providing news and current affairs to our valued audiences," said Kganyago. Molefe's appointment was confirmed after some board members, led by deputy chairman Feleng Sekha, had opposed it for months. Said Sekha yesterday: "The board of directors of the SABC is pleased to confirm the appointment of Mr Phil Molefe as group executive of news and current affairs." The ANC welcomed Molefe's appointment as "a move which will go a long way in restoring the much-needed stability at the public broadcaster", but the DA said the appointment was "profoundly problematic". Natasha Michael, the DA communications spokesman, said Molefe had close links to the ANC and that the party believed that he would not act fairly and independently.
